Our advantages

  • The master's degree curricula in Byzantine and Neo-Hellenic Philology are developed within the framework of the tradition established at St Petersburg University in the late 19th to early 20th century. Master's degree curricula and course programmes are being improved and adjusted every year in accordance with the most important modern trends in the development of domestic and world science;
  • The process of education includes lectures, seminars and practical classes, during which students prepare both oral reports and written works. The students are expected to deliver their presentations at regular classes, scientific seminars, and at the international conference of students of Philology, held annually at St Petersburg University. The knowledge gained by the students is tested through reviews during classes, test works, and exams at the end of the session. The final semester of study is devoted exclusively to the preparation of a master's thesis;
  • Every year leading Byzantines and neo-Hellenists of the world give lectures and hold seminars within the framework of the master's curricula "Byzantine and modern Greek Philology". They are available and recommended to all students, regardless of their profile. In particular, over the past few years, lectures and seminars have been held by: Georgios Nikitiadis (Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of Greece); Paschalis Kitromilides (Institute of modern Greek studies, Athens, Greece); Creighton Chrisohoidis (Byzantine Institute, Athens, Greece); Eratosthenes Capsomeres (University of Ioannina, Greece); Georgios Panagopoulos (University of Ioannina, Greece); Antonia Diallo (the Athenian Academy of Sciences, Greece); Tasos, Kaplanis (University of Cyprus, Cyprus); Kostas Melakopides (University of Cyprus, Cyprus); Panagiotis Christodoulou (University of Cyprus, Cyprus); Peter Mackridge (Oxford, UK); Peter Schreiner (University of Cologne, Germany); Philipo Ronconi (Centre for Byzantine, modern Greek, and south-eastern European studies, France); Brian Joseph (University of Ohio, USA); and Claudia Rapp (University of California, USA);
  • Within the framework of inter-University agreements, undergraduates are trained in European universities (University of Perugia, Munster, Cyprus, Athens, the Greek Institute of Venice, Oxford). Additionally, in the summertime, the students have the opportunity to be involved in the work of various language schools in Greece and Cyprus. Undergraduate students of the department actively participate in scientific conferences and dialectological expeditions.
