The «Education» section of the 7th St Petersburg International Cultural Forum held at St Petersburg University will include an international conference «University Museums and Collections: Natural Science Heritage in the Modern World». Employees of Russian and foreign museums will discuss the history and current work of the natural science museums and the collections established at universities.

Every year, interest to university collections is growing, and experts are actively looking for ways of preserving and promoting them. At the plenary session, leading experts will take part in discussions devoted to how natural science museums and collections are involved in the academic activities of universities. The legal status of university collections will also be discussed. The discussion will also deal with such burning issues as preservation, accounting, cataloguing and digitisation of collections and their presentation in the virtual space.

  • Andrey Smurov, Director, Museum of Geography, Moscow State University
  • Dmitry Geltman, Director, V.L. Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Elena Sukhacheva, Director, V. V. Dokuchaev Central Museum of Soil Science, Russian Academy of Sciences

The plenary session will include the presentation of the album «The Knowledge Collection: Museums and Collections of St Petersburg University». For the first time, this unique publication will fully present the wealth and the academic and cultural potential of St Petersburg University collections, as well as the contribution of University staff and students to their formation and study.

Another key event of the conference will be a sectional meeting at St Petersburg University bringing together representatives of city and university museums in Russia and Europe. In addition, the conference participants will be able to visit the museums and collections of St Petersburg University located in the Twelve Collegia Building.
