Inmodern society, social, political, economic and cultural processes are under increasing pressure from globalisation. Concrete political actions increasingly depend on the dynamic interaction of local and global factors. The solution of contemporary global problems requires not only the combined efforts of states, but also of businesses, civil society and international organisations, which are influenced by various ideologies and represent groups with varying interests.

The harmonisation of relations between all the participants in the global political process becomes possible within networks based on innovative information and communication technologies and digitalisation of various aspects of social life. The globalised world is full of new challenges and requires leaders who are up to date with political theory and practice, are aware of the international context of ongoing processes, and can professionally use digital technologies.
The graduates of a new master’s programme “Political Global Studies” are to become such specialists. The programme is unique in the Russian educational system. The students learn to analyse the effects of globalisation on various aspects of people’s lives, see the prospects of global operation and find optimum solutions for the problems impeding sustainable development and evaluate the potential of Russia as a global leader. Studies at St Petersburg University will prepare them for interaction with various political actors: state and local authorities, social movements, non-governmental organisations and businesses.
Political global studies are not only meant to evaluate what happens today, but also to forecast the future. It is important to note that the programme involves political analysts, specialists in economics, philosophy and political psychology. Classes will include presentations, business simulations, colloquia, political debates, roundtables, involving a wide use of case studies. The students will learn to write analytical and expert reports. Also, much attention will be given to the study of the English language and its role as a lingua franca of globalisation.
