The Test of Russian as a Foreign Language levels:

  • Elementary Level (TEL/A1).
    Successful performance in the Elementary Test represents a standard of initial competence in Russian which enables a candidate to satisfy his elementary communicative needs in a limited number of everyday situations.

  • Basic Level (TBL/A2).
    Successful performance in the Preliminary Test represents a standard competence in Russian which enables a candidate to satisfy basic communicative needs in a limited number of situations in everyday and cultural spheres. This level is required to obtain Russian citizenship. Though it is not enough to study at the Russian educational institutions, except for preparatory faculties (programs or courses) for foreigners.

  • First Certification Level (TORFL-I/B1).
    Successful performance in the First Level Certificate indicates an intermediate level of competence, which enables a candidate to satisfy his main communicative needs in everyday, cultural, educational and professional spheres in line with the State Standard of Competence in Russian as a Foreign Language. In addition, the First Level Certificate allows its holder to enroll in a Russian university.

  • The 2nd Level Certificate (TORFL-II /В2).
    Successful performance in the Second Level Certificate indicates a high level of competence in Russian which enables a candidate to satisfy his communicative needs in a wide range of situations in cultural, educational and professional spheres. It allows a holder to receive bachelor's, master's and Ph.D degrees from Russian universities, excluding certain subjects.

  • The 3rd Level Certificate (TORFL-III /C1).
    Successful performance in the Third Level Certificate indicates that the candidate has a high level of language command in all communicative contexts, which allows him to conduct professional activity in Russian in areas such as: Linguistics, Translation, Editing, Journalism, International Relations and management.

  • The 4th Level Certificate (TORFL-IV/C2).
    Successful performance in the Fourth Level Certificate indicates Proficiency in Russian and the candidate's competence close to a native Russian speaker. Enables holder to receive a Master of Arts degree in philology, undertake all forms of work in Russian philology.

The Test of Russian as a Foreign Language is held in 2 days and consists of the following subtests:

First day: Reading, Writing, Vocabulary and Grammar;
Second day: Listening and Speaking.

Retake policy for exams

All the TORFL certificates do not have an expiry date. Applicants who fail the integration exam or the TORFL receive an inquiry with results that is valid for 2 years. Retake policy for the test of Russian as a foreign language:

  • in case one or two subtests failed applicant can retake the subtest on the full price of the exam; 
  • in case more than two subtests failed applicant can retake all the subtests on the full price of the exam.

Preparing for the exam

To prepare for the TORFL applicants can use exam preparation materials above or appeal to the dean of the Institute of Russian as a foreign language to get information about training courses for foreign students.
