St Petersburg University is one of the world’s biggest centres to provide teaching of Russian as a foreign language to international students

The teaching process is organised by 150 distinguished language instructors who are members of SPbU teaching staff. Many of them have developed their own teaching methods and study guides devoted to Russian as a foreign language.

Every year over 1,000 people from over 65 countries join SPbU Russian language courses for international students.

Applicants are welcome all year round. SPbU offers the following programmes:

 

Russian as a foreign language. Short-term Course 

The course lasts from 1 to 3 weeks.

This short term course is designed for international applicants and has a minimum entry requirement of no less than A2 in Russian language proficiency.  The course aims to help students enhance their Russian language proficiency, particularly their listening and speaking skills.
All courses are taught in groups of maximum 15 students. Classes run from Monday to Friday.

Tuition fee in 2021/22 for one trainee:

  • 1 week 11,000 rubles
  • 2 weeks 21,000 rubles

Russian as a foreign language. General course

The course is designed for international applicants. It has a modular structure with a minimum duration of 4 weeks (you can choose from 4 to 79 weeks). There is a diagnostic test at the end of each module.

This course is designed for international applicants, high school graduates as well as university and college students. It aims to improve the Russian language skills, develop confidence for everyday communication and expand knowledge of the Russian culture. Teaching is carried out using textbooks and study guides developed by teachers of St Petersburg University.

Training fee for one module (4 weeks) is 42,000 rubles.

Russian Language for English-speaking students

The main aim of the course is to help students who have never learned Russian before or with initial or basic knowledge to improve their level of Russian and develop speaking skills. Lessons include comprehensive teaching of different aspects of the Russian language:

  • Learning main aspects of the language
  • Doing exercises for phonetics, grammar and vocabulary
  • Developing knowledge of Russia and the Russian language through country studies

For organized groups of 10 students or more

Russian as a foreign language for mathematicians – 4 levels

The course will be of interest to the foreign teachers and specialists in the field of mathematics. The program is designed for the teachers who start to learn Russian from the very beginning, as well as those who want to improve their level of Russian language proficiency and develop their communication skills in the professional sphere (mathematics and computer science).

Type of study (fourth filter): Full-time, online training using ICT is possible

Duration: 12 months/48 weeks

Russian as a foreign language for diplomats

The programme is designed to train employees of diplomatic missions of foreign countries in Russia who want to achieve the A2 level of Russian.

Type of study: Full-time

Tuition fee: 88,000 rubles

The main idea of the programme is to provide employees of diplomatic missions with an opportunity to: master Russian at the A2 level; acquire elements of the professional communicative competence (a diplomat’s competence) in Russian; and obtain the local knowledge about Russia and its history in a convenient mode.

The lecturers are leading experts in the field of Russian as a foreign language, authors of textbooks and study guides on Russian as a foreign language, experienced teachers and developers of programmes in Russian as a foreign language.

Successful mastering of the course will enable employees of diplomatic missions of foreign countries to: read and listen to the A2 level texts in Russian; use correctly grammatical structures when writing various texts and when speaking with native speakers of the Russian language; and participate in standard communicative situations and elementary communicative situations of professional communication. As part of the course, students will learn about the history and traditions of contemporary Russia. They will also get acquainted with texts on the history of diplomacy, machinery of a state, and diplomatic etiquette in Russian.

The programme provides practical classes in Russian. They are either integrated or aspect-oriented and cover such aspects as ‘Grammar. Vocabulary’, ‘Reading’, ‘Writing’, ‘Speaking’, and ‘Listening’. The programme has been designed taking into account professional needs of students.

Contemporary Russian Literature

Intended for high school graduates, university and college undergraduates, as well as for international students who are interested in the main tendencies of contemporary Russian prose. The students who enroll the course will be shown the works of Boris Akunin, Victor Pelevin, Zakhar Prilepin and many other famous Russian writers.

The course allows foreign students to learn about contemporary Russian culture through literature. It helps them to build bridges with native speakers and to compare the main trends in their culture with the Russian ones.

Duration: – 3 weeks.

Summer School of Russian as a Foreign Language

It is a 2-week summer course (implemented from May to October) designed by St Petersburg University for the foreign trainees above the age of 14 with any level of Russian proficiency (from A1 to C2).

For organized groups of 10 people or more.The course is structured to include active and interactive practical classes (dialogues, role plays, following instructions, etc.). Educational guided tours around St Petersburg and the University help to raise cultural awareness and put the theoretical cultural knowledge into practice.

School of Russian as a foreign language in the field of tourism

The programme will be interesting for those foreigners who study at educational institutions of travel sphere or work in the sphere of international tourism. It is aimed to those who want to improve their level of Russian proficiency or start to study Russian from the very beginning.

Duration: From 1 to 2 weeks (by arrangement with a customer)

Winter School of Russian as a Foreign Language

The programme will be interesting for the foreign students whose level of Russian proficiency is not lower than A2; within organized groups (of 10 people or more).

St Petersburg University Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language

The St Petersburg University Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language is for schoolchildren and students between the ages of 14 and 27. It is a unique chance to test their knowledge, creativity and Russian language proficiency in practice. The main purpose of the Olympiad is to develop foreign students’ interest in the Russian language and culture. The Olympiad is organised in two rounds: the preliminary round is held by correspondence; and the final round is held on-site.
