First concert of the University orchestra

1842

In the Assembly Hall, there was the first concert of the University orchestra, led by the cellist, composer and conductor Karl Schuberth.

Later, Anton Rubinstein, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Pauline Viardot, Alexander Varlamov and many other musicians and singers took part in the concerts of the University orchestra. It was here that some works by Mily Balakirev and Alexander Dargomyzhsky were first performed. Tickets were not easy to get. In the 1840s-1850s, the University concerts gathered the best part of the intelligentsia of St Petersburg.
