Olga Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia is the first female professor at the University


Olga Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia is the first female professor at the University. She is the second woman who defended the master’s thesis at the University (1915). She taught the history of medieval England.

Olga Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaia is an outstanding researcher of the Western European Middle Ages, the founder of the school of Latin palaeography, which brought up many students. According to Doctor of History Boris Kaganovich, ‘she was one of the most refined and perfect historian-artists in Russian culture.’

Mariia Ostrovskaia (1914) was the first woman who defended the master’s thesis at the University and the first teacher (Privatdozentin) at the University. She made a significant contribution to the study of peasant life in the late Middle Ages in the Russian North.
