Writers on a visit to Dmitri Mendeleev. Slavonic Literature and Culture Day

24 May 2022

This guided tour programme is in cooperation with the M Gorky Scientific Library of St Petersburg University.

In the early 1870s, together with Ivan Kramskoi, Dmitri Mendeleev founded a society that included painters, scientists, and writers. These meetings were called "Mendeleev Wednesdays". Along with professors from the University, the guests of Dmitri Mendeleev were Ivan Kramskoi, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, the Vasnetsov brothers, Vasily Vereshchagin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ivan Shishkin, as well as writers Nikolai Wagner (Kot Murlyka), Vsevolod Garshin, and Nikolai Strakhov.

With many of them, Dmitri Mendeleev was connected by long friendship. Moreover, with some of them (Pyotr Ershov and Kirill Lemokh), he was connected by family ties. You will find out about this and much more on our tour that day.
