QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 has recently been published. It shows a significant improvement in the position of St Petersburg University in four subjects where it is represented.

During 2018 St Petersburg University moved up 29 positions in the subject “Engineering and Technology”.

In "Arts & Humanities" and "Natural Sciences" the University came close to the top 100 in the world, taking the 114th and the 131st place respectively.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject has been published since 2011 by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The compilers of the list evaluate the activities of the world’s top universities in 48 disciplines grouped into five broad subject areas: “Arts & Humanities”; “Engineering and Technology”; “Life Sciences & Medicine”; “Natural Sciences”; and “Social Sciences & Management”.

The results of this established international ranking once again confirmed the competitive advantage of a classical university – its interdisciplinarity. St Petersburg University also achieved significant results by specific subjects. This year it is represented by 15 subjects, and for the first time in its history by “Materials Science” and “Statistics and Operational Research”.

Among the world’s universities, St Petersburg University moved up two “weight classes” (groups of 50 places) at the same time in “Biology” and one “weight class” in four subjects: “Politics”; “Business”; “Computer Science”; and “Philosophy”. The University held positions in the first hundred of the world’s top universities (group 51-100) in "Mathematics", "Linguistics" and "Modern Languages". It came close to the cherished hundred in "Politics", "Computer Science", "Philosophy" and "History".

Rankings by all subject areas and disciplines are compiled according to four indicators: academic reputation; employer reputation; research citations per paper article in relevant journals; and the University H-index with a sufficient number of publications and reviews of the academic community and employers.
