In just a year, St Petersburg University has moved up 87 positions in the subject ranking of the Round University Ranking (RUR) in the humanities and moved from the Golden League to the Diamond League. At present, it is ranked 91st in the world. Additionally, the University has improved its position in the field of social sciences: it has moved from 255th place to 222nd in the ranking list.
The RUR Subject Ranking evaluates the performance of more than 800 of the world's top universities in six broad subject areas: humanities; life sciences; medical sciences; natural sciences; technical sciences; and social sciences.
One of the hallmarks of the final evaluation of a higher education institution in the ranking is the level of its international diversity. It should be noted that foreign students are increasingly choosing St Petersburg University’s academic programmes related specifically to the humanities and social sciences. The interest of foreigners in the Russian language, history and culture is very high. Additionally, St Petersburg University pays special attention to teaching Russian as a foreign language. Thanks to the work of the Language Testing Centre last summer, the University organised the largest test in Europe in Russian as a foreign language; and high school students from six countries today have the opportunity to study the history, literature and geography of Russia within the framework of the ‘Online School’ project of St Petersburg University.
The Round University Ranking is an international university ranking published by RUR Rankings Agency in partnership with the international company Clarivate Analytics. The ranking assesses the performance of several hundred top universities according to 20 indicators that measure four areas of university activity: teaching; research; international diversity; and financial sustainability.
For reference: the World University Ranking RUR was published last spring, in which
St Petersburg University is listed among the world top 100 universities in the teaching ranking. According to the methodology established by the compilers of the ranking, the universities in this group are defined as ‘Diamond’. In other nominations of this ranking, St Petersburg University registers an improvement of its positions in the world lists.
