For many years St Petersburg University Olympiad for schoolchildren has been one of the most popular intellectual contests for the most talented and ambitious students from Russia and other countries all around the world.  

In the 2020/2021 academic year the geography of the qualifying round has expanded. There are participants from 85 of Russia’s regions and Azerbaijan, Angola, Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, Bulgaria, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, France and many other foreign countries.

Compared to last year, the number of participants has increased by almost 25,000. A record number of 100,540 people have been registered this year (in 2020 there were over 76,000 applications). Mathematics, medicine, law, philology, journalism, foreign languages – to demonstrate their expertise students can choose from a wide range of subjects from hard and natural sciences to social sciences and humanities. The main goal of the Olympiad is to develop creative skills and encourage students’ interest in research activities and learning, as well as to support gifted children.

Winners and awardees of the final round of St Petersburg University Olympiad for schoolchildren are granted special rights when entering the universities of Russia including St Petersburg University (either without entrance examinations, or with 100 points for the exam in their major subject). The competitions are on the list of Olympiads for schoolchildren included in the list approved by the Order of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
