As applications are submitted electronically, in order to apply one needs to create an applicant’s Personal Account on the official website of the University and upload all the required documents (the full list of required documents for admission on the government-funded and fee-paying (contractual) basis is published on the Admissions Committee webpage).

To help applicants explore the educational opportunities at SPbU and specifics of admission in 2022, the University holds a series of online events “Information meetings with foreign applicants of SPbU” in Russian, English, Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, and Spanish.

According to Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo), St Petersburg University has been recognised as the most popular university in Russia among international students for several years in a row.

To attract talented young people to study in Russian educational institutions of higher education, the University traditionally maintains a variety of projects for foreign citizens aimed at promoting the Russian language and culture abroad, as well as organising educational and career-oriented events and intellectual competitions.

Annually, SPbU conducts the Olympiad for schoolchildren with the participation of foreign citizens. Since 2018, SPbU has been organising the Olympiad in Russian as a foreign language for schoolchildren and students abroad, and since 2019, together with the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, it has been implementing an online Olympiad project in Russian as a foreign language.

For school children who speak Russian (B1+), SPbU provides an opportunity to study general educational subjects in the classes of leading professors by means of distance learning technologies as part of “St Petersburg State University Online School” project. Lesson recordings are available to everyone.

Assessment of the Russian language proficiency is also available for international applicants online by means of taking the TORFL exam.

Furthermore, SPbU has designed online courses aimed at learning the Russian language, culture, and literature. The University holds webinars on the specifics of teaching Russian and the state testing system for Russian as a foreign language, as well as workshops and consultations both in Russian and in English on preparation for the TORFL exam.

For international applicants interested in further studying in Russian, the University offers various additional educational programmes in Russian as a foreign language, including an additional educational programme “Preparatory Department (for foreign citizens)”.
