Petrography Museum

Dear visitors! Please pay attention to our special visiting regulations due to the epidemiological situation.

A limited number of people – not more than 10 people with the distance of 1,5 – 2 metres (1 person per 20 square metres). Visitors must wear protective gloves and mask. Protective equipment can be provided at the entrance of the Museum. Also, guests will have their temperatures taken with contactless thermometer. Sanitary treatment of toilets and common areas is carried out regularly with the use of disinfectors, as well as additional disinfection of door knobs, railings and other contact surfaces. The sanitary zone has antiseptic devices and instructions on proper hand washing. Regular ventilation of premises is carried out. We apologise for the temporary inconveniences.

Petrography collections of the University began to take shape in the 1870s on the initiative

and with an active participation of the first professor of the University Aleksandr Inostrantsev.

The Petrography Museum of St Petersburg University stores collections of rock sections of

Nikolay Przhevalsky’s friends, colleagues and students: Grigory Potanin, Mikhail Pevtsov, Innokentii Lopatin and others. Many academicians contributed to the collection of the Museum:

  • Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences, Nikolai Eliseev
  • Professors Vladimir Timofeev, Galina Saranchina, Nikolai Shinkarev, Nikolai Kotov, Sergei Grigorev

Reception of visitors is organised by sessions in groups of no more than 5 people with excursion services by appointment. Sessions:

Tuesday, Thursday: 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm

Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm

Admission tickets:

Adults – 350 roubles, reduced tickets – 175 roubles, group ticket – 4,000 roubles, reduced group ticket – 2,000 roubles.

If you want to buy a reduced price ticket, you need to show an appropriate ID that proves that you have the right for a discount according to the legislation of the Russian Federation.

You can pay with cash via Sberbank ATM at 7/9 Universitetskaya Embankment, Mendeleevskaya Line entrance (the ATM might charge an additional fee)
