79th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War
A congratulatory note on Victory Day from the Rector of St Petersburg University, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolay Kropachev.
Dear Students and Faculty,
On 9 May we celebrate a holiday that has a special place in our country’s history. This day is a symbol of the unwavering courage and resilience of the Russian people, a symbol of triumph over adversity.
The University honours and cherishes the memory of the brave defenders of the Motherland. More than 2,500 LSU teachers, postgraduate staff and students left for the front, and those who remained in the city did not cease their research and other work in support of the war effort.
It is with immense gratitude that we remember the victorious conclusion of the Great Patriotic War. It is difficult to find words worthy of those who crushed Nazism. We salute the valour of the heroes whose bravery will forever inspire new generations.
Today, the world is once again at a turning point. As in the years of the Great Patriotic War, the country is once again united, with the victory of 1945 as its guiding star. I have no doubt that unity will be the key to our ability to withstand any threat and will be the basis for Russia’s prosperity.
