Programme description

The part-time non-degree programme "Contemporary Russian Theatre: Tendencies and Movements" introduces the trends in the development of Russian theatre from the creative surge of avant-garde art in the early 1920s to the experiments of the new drama of the 21st century. The duration of the course is two weeks. There is a special emphasis on the systems of Konstantin Stanislavski and Vsevolod Meyerhold, the theatre of the Khrushchev Thaw, and the phenomenon of the director’s theatre of late socialism.

The course will allow you to learn more about modern Russian literature, the history of its formation in the late Soviet and 1990s, the main trends in prose of the 2000s — 2010s. The course will allow you to learn more about key tendencies which influenced the formation of Russian theater, as well as Russian culture of the 1920s—2020s. History of the theatre is considered from the perspective of multidisciplinary approach, students will not only acquaintance with the most significant dramatic texts and productions, immersion in the socio-historical context of its creation, but also an appeal to various director’s theories and ways of organizing the stage space.
