Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics (English)

Programme description

The bachelor’s programme "Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics (English)" is designed to train experts in theoretical linguistics who are ready to carry out research and teaching activities. The programme was developed by prominent St Petersburg linguists based on St Petersburg scholarly traditions and the best practices of the world’s top universities that train experts in theoretical and experimental linguistics. The programme focuses on: an in-depth study of the disciplines of the curriculum; and preparing students for independent research activities in the relevant fields of linguistics. An extensive system of practices also serves this purpose. The programme involves the study of: four living European and oriental languages at their choice; and Ancient Greek, Latin, and Old Church Slavonic.

For successful training on the academic programme, applicants must know English at the level not lower than B1+ CEFR.

Our advantages
  • The programme provides a comprehensive linguistic education in general linguistics and language theory. Special attention is also paid to experimental research methods.
  • The curriculum of the programme includes a wide range of linguistic disciplines. Students acquire knowledge of theoretical, applied and experimental linguistics. They also master the competencies necessary for studying the language and solving various applied linguistic problems.
  • In-depth training in the theory of language involves the study of a wide range of living and dead languages (Ancient Greek, Latin, Old Slavonic). Students study English as the first foreign language, and a number of European languages of their choice as the second and third foreign language.
  • Final certification includes state exams in English and general linguistics, as well as public defence of their bachelor’s graduation projects.

Graduates of the programme:

  • Have good command of at least two living and three dead foreign languages;
  • know various methods of linguistic analysis in the field of theoretical and experimental linguistics; methodological fundamentals of teaching a foreign language; and research skills in the field of linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics;
  • have skills of field research and field data processing.
