Wheeled Mechanisms contest
On the day of the mechanical engineer, which is celebrated on 30 October in Russia, the Museum of the History of Physics and Mathematics St Petersburg University announced a new contest for schoolchildren and students "Wheeled mechanisms".
The Museum of the History of Physics and Mathematics at St Petersburg University has a wide range of models of mechanisms created and developed by various mechanical scientists. Little wonder, most of these mechanisms are wheeled mechanisms because the wheel is one of the oldest inventions in the recorded history.
By wheeled mechanisms, in the broad sense of the word, we mean the mechanisms with a wheel: a gear; an engagement wheel (gear); or an ordinary wheel without gearing to name just a few.
We invite the participants of the new contest to recall as many inventions with a wheel as they can. If the presence of a wheel in any invention is not obvious, please explain in which part of the design it is used. The indication of the author of the invention is welcome.
Works should be sent to the email address: museum_mmphys@spbu.ru from 1 November 2022 to 8 January 2023. Please, indicate your full name; a year of study at school or at university; and the name of the educational institution. The results of the contest will be summed up in January. Prizes await their winners!
