The Rector of St. Petersburg State University, Nikolai Kropachev, has attended the first meeting of the organizing committee for the bid to host the International Congress of Mathematicians. The meeting was led by Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.
The meeting addressed organizational and technical issues. It was decided that this year the National Committee of Russian mathematicians with the support of the Government would draw up and submit a bid to host the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians in St. Petersburg.
The decision to draw up a bid to host the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians in St. Petersburg was initiated by the Rector of St. Petersburg State University and approved in early 2015 at a meeting of the RAS Department of Mathematics chaired by the Academician Secretary of the Department, a St. Petersburg State University Professor Ludvig Faddeev.
According to the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, the Rector of St. Petersburg State University Nikolai Kropachev and the Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov were appointed deputy co-chairs of the organizing committee co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister A. Dvorkovich and St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko.
The group also includes the head of the Chebyshev Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory at St. Petersburg State University, a Fields Medal winner Stanislav Smirnov, and a SPbU Professor, Academician Secretary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ludvig Faddeev.
The International Congress of Mathematicians is the most influential convention of the leading mathematicians of the world. It was established in 1897 under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and is held every 4 years. At the Congress (which usually lasts about two weeks), the names of the winners of prestigious awards for achievements in mathematics are announced and a number of other (satellite) mathematical conferences and related activities are held. In 2022, the 29th International Congress of Mathematicians will take place.
The decision on the venue of the 2022 Congress will be made at the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in 2018, to be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
