293 academic year: SPbU

SPbU has held a matriculation ceremony at the Academician Sakharov square. 293th  academic year at SPbU started with the noon firing of the canon at the Naryshkin Bastion at the Peter and Paul Fortress.

August 31, thousands of first-year students of SPbU came to the matriculation ceremony. Before, they organized a flash mob to make an abbreviation of SPbU at the Academician Sakharov square.

This year, SPbU enrolled 3,175 students for bachelor and master courses – they are the best students from 78 regions in Russia.

At 12.00, Chairperson of the SPbU’s International Student Club Oksana Tretiakova, Deputy Chairperson of the Student Union Mikhail Veleshnev, and Director of the Admissions Office Aleksandr Babich started firing of the canon of the Naryshkin Bastion at the Peter and Paul Fortress.

The event was visited by SPbU’s professors, graduates, and honoured guests: Governor Georgii Poltavchenko, Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative in the North-West region Liubov Sovershaeva,  Chairperson of the Legislative Assembly of St Petersburg Viachaslav Makarov, President of the Alumni Association Aleksei Iakunin, and others.

“Today, you will be matriculated and get a student card of the university with global recognition as it has proved its excellence in education and research throughout the centuries, — said the Governor of St Petersburg Georgii Poltavchenko. — You have an example to follow: St Petersburg University has produced lot of outstanding scientists, politicians, and entrepreneurs. I reckon, that their success is the tribute to excellent education they received at the University. You have a long way to go. You will have a vibrant and dazzling life”.

96 is the minimal USE score to be enrolled at the Mathematics and Law with a focus on Chinese Language and Law.

SPbU’s Rector Nikolay Kropachev congratulated the fist-year students with their victory on entering the University. He said that most students were enrolled on the basis of their USE score, and only those who chose arts had to pass the entrance tests.

The University is entitled to have its own entrance tests, still we don’t have them. We want excellent students from all our country to have an opportunity to enter the University. This year, an average USE score was 90.75.

It is a real happiness to enter the University, he says, but you have to roll your sleeves and work hard to gain success.

During the matriculation ceremony, the students should tell the oath to become part of the student brotherhood. Traditionally, the students get their students cards, and the University chorus sings Gaudeamus.

“Today you are becoming part of the renowned graduates of St Petersburg University who are the elite in politics, economics, engineering, research, science, and culture in Russia, — said the Chairperson of the Legislative Assembly Viachaslav Makarov. — The future of Russia is in your hands”.

The event ended at 20:00 at the Spit of Vasilievsky Island, when students made their Ships of Hope where they wrote their cherished dreams and set them afloat across the Neva River.
