ARWU-2018: St Petersburg University retains its position in the ranking of the best universities in the world

The academic rating of the world’s universities is considered the oldest and one of the most respected global university ratings. ARWU takes into account such indicators as: the number of university graduates who have received high scientific awards; number of scientific and pedagogical workers with the same awards; advances in research, and other criteria.

This year, the St Petersburg University scores for the number of articles included in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index have moved from the 34.3 mark (in 2017) to the 36.4 level. This figure is 20% of the total score. Also, points of the University have grown, which demonstrate the ratio of the average value of the scientific results obtained and the number of scientific and pedagogical workers: last year they were at the level of 19.7, and in the rating of this year at 20.2.

It must be recalled that this year the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects — 2018 (ARWU) has also been published, where St Petersburg University was represented in five disciplines, including breakthrough achievements in the field of automation and management, taking the 32nd place in the world rating.

The ARWU rating was originally created by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (hence its second name is the «Shanghai Rating») in order to assess the positions of the Chinese higher school in the international scientific and educational space. Today, in the main ranking, the top 500 universities in the world are represented. Since 2017, the ARWU subject rating has also been published, assessing the achievements of more than 4,000 universities of the world in 54 disciplines in five fields of knowledge (science, engineering, life sciences, social and medical sciences).
