  • >

St Petersburg University has held a ceremony to award those who have won scholarships and prizes from SPbU and Gazprom.

This year, the scholarships and grants were awarded to 48 students in mathematics at SPbU and two young scientists for their achievements in research. In the nomination “SPbU postdoc” the prize was awarded to Sergei Sinchuk, while in “SPbU post-graduate student” to Ilia Nekrasov. The prize winners are selected by the competition committee that comprises the members of the Chebyshev Laboratory at SPbU and corresponding members of the RAS.

The “Mathematical progression” is a SPbU-Gazprom joint educational programme implemented as part of the programme of social investments “Home cities and towns”.  The mission of the project is to attract talented children in mathematics from the regions to study at the Russia’s leading universities and support young scientists in the applied and theoretical mathematics.

“The Chebyshev Laboratory is at the forefront of the mathematical science today in St Petersburg and worldwide. All best school graduates and young scientists are striving to get into the University. They are well aware that education in mathematics is a high priority today as most breakthroughs in research are related to mathematics. All the research findings are implemented in the projects of our business-partners website. It means that it is a matter of several years when our students’ achievement will shape our future in research and technology”, — said SPbU Vice-Rector for Research Sergei Aplonov.

“Business support is part of what the University is concerned with. Our collaboration with Gazprom makes our laboratory the leading centre in Russia. Our research projects attracts young people, and our educational programmes the school graduates. Business contribution into science is vital for Russia”, — said the director of the Chebyshev Laboratory at SPbU and Field Prize winner Stanislav Smirnov.

As part of the long-term collaboration between SPbU and Gazprom since 2013, Gazprom has been supporting the Chabyshev Laboratory. The company provide financial support for internships abroad, courses, seminars, and conferences at the laboratory. Besides, finance is allocated partially for student month allowances who have achieved results in mathematics and informatics.

“Fundamental sciences are vital for innovation development of our country. The research outcomes form grounds for developing new technologies and innovations to ensure industrial progress. Gazprom and SPbU create opportunities for the talented young mathematicians to study and be involved in the projects carried out by the world and Russia’s leading scientists. The project is also practice-oriented: the laboratory takes part in our research and technological projects on the mathematical modelling and digital technologies. All these make “Mathematical progression” a long-term investment into the Russian fundamental science and technological development”, — said the Chairperson of the Board of Director of Gazprom Aleksandr Dukov.
