Let’s learn to speak Russian: SPbU Russian as a foreign language short-term courses

St Petersburg University "Russian as a foreign language. Short-Term courses" are designed to improve the level of Russian language proficiency and develop speaking skills.

Students of the courses will have an opportunity to immerse themselves into the Russian language and foreign environment as well. "Russian as a foreign language. Short-Term courses" are available in both online and offline formats. Students are encouraged to apply for course throughout the year.

St Petersburg University offers a wide range courses in Russian as a foreign language. There are opportunities to study contemporary Russian literature, Russian language in the field of tourism, Russian language for diplomats, Russian language for mathematicians, etc. For more information, please visit SPbU Centre of Additional Educational Programs in the Field of Russian as a Foreign Language Website.

During one-week course (takes 20 hours of training) a student will get acquainted with Russian sounds and letters, learn about 100 Russian words, including their gender. Besides, students will learn how to introduce yourself, greet other people, and say goodbyes, ask questions in a shop using standard phrases, read and understand messages of up to 30 words, and write the learned phrases.

During two-week course (takes 40 hours of training) a student will learn how to communicate in standard situations in a dormitory, transport, a canteen, and a library. Students will learn about 200 words not only in the nominative case, but also in the accusative case and in the prepositional case. They will also understand how to use verbs in present tense to communicate in the situations mentioned above, read and understand texts of up to 60 words, write the learned phrases.

During three-week course (takes 60 hours of training) a student will understand how to communicate in various situations in a dormitory, transport, a university, a canteen, and a library. Students of the course will learn around 300 Russian words and understand how to use them in nominative, accusative, prepositional, dative, ablative and genitive cases in separate meanings. Furthermore, students will study in present, past and future tenses verbs necessary for communication in above-mentioned situations. They will be able to read and understand texts of up to 90 words, write the learned phrases, short text messages and emails.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to start and maintain the conversation, ask questions, and deliver a monologue. They will learn how to draw up letters, be able to read and understand the texts based on materials of the course, and will gain country-specific knowledge of Russia.
