A new master's programme of St Petersburg University to prepare theorists and practitioners in the sightseeing business

St Petersburg University launches a new master's programme ‘Historical and Cultural Tour Guidance’. The programme has been designed for those who are interested in the history of Russia, and the cultural and social features of the development of regions. In particular, it studies St Petersburg and the Leningrad region. Its implementation in the educational system is relevant, because the sightseeing business occupies a significant place in shaping the image of St Petersburg. It is the northern capital of Russia, and is traditionally an important world tourist centre.

The training of students in this field is also changing. Today, tour guides act as communicators of the history of Russia. This implies their in-depth educational background. In most cases, they are the first to give an idea of the history of the country, this is especially applicable to international visitors. There is a demand for new-style specialists with high level theoretical knowledge and practical skills who are capable of carrying out research activities. Academic courses are focused on: the history of the Russian regions and St Petersburg; the study of the sightseeing business and museum affairs; the architectural styles of the city; current issues in urban studies; and other historical and theoretical disciplines. Acknowledged experts will provide training to master’s students in the classroom. The vital part of the programme is occupied by practical training, during which students will master the skills of conducting guided tours around the city. They will also become familiar with the methodology for writing tour texts.

This is a full-time, two-year programme, and there will be scholarship and paid tuition places. You will find admission policies here.

Another competitive advantage is international academic mobility. The Institute of History of St Petersburg University cooperates with: New Bulgarian University (Bulgaria); the University of Bergen (Norway); and the University of Wrocław (Poland). To implement the practical activities of master’s students, the programme is focused on interaction with employers and takes into account professional standards and recommendations. Graduates will be able to: compile and carry out guided tours and various historical and cultural projects; and apply successfully the acquired knowledge in practice. All sorts of career opportunities are open for graduates: sightseeing, tourism, museum, library and archival activities, as well as academic work. The acquired knowledge and skills can be applicable to the sightseeing business not only in Russia, but also anywhere in the world.
