Oceanologist from SPbU participated in a Summer School in Portugal

A selected group of postgraduate students and postdocs participated in a 5-day intensive training period followed by a three-day expedition on the tall-ship Creoula. The oceanologists went to the Berlengas Islands, 80 nautical miles North of Lisbon. The ship-cruise had a continuous observational program, including atmosphere and ocean soundings, geological and biological sampling in the water column, and sediments retrieval.

"In the summer school I had a chance to attend a course of lectures on a number of topics that are highly interesting and are directly related to my research work," said Anastasia. "I also met young researchers from different countries; friendly and academic ties were established, which is one of the most important advantages of this school. Of particular notice is the excellent organisational work done by the Portugal side. During the academic poster session we learned what research was carried out by every participant of the school. And during the ship-cruise I learned how to work with the equipment and had an unforgettable experience of travelling on a sailing vessel, having at the same time the opportunity to study variability of the coastal environment and to put my theoretical knowledge into practice."

In St. Petersburg University, Anastasia Fedorova studies the conditions of the Arctic seas at the time of climate change. One of the important tasks of her research is studying the influence of passing atmospheric cyclones on the ecosystems of the Barents Sea. The study uses the data received by remote sensing. Her research work is carried out with support from the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, of which SPbU is a co-founder.
