Professor at St Petersburg University awarded with the honorary title ‘Honoured Doctor of the Russian Federation’

Sergei Shcherbak has been teaching at the University since 2011 when he headed the Department of Postgraduate Medical Education. The professor teaches clinical residency students, interns, and students of several advanced training programmes in rehabilitation. He is a member of the Council of the degree programme of St Petersburg University ‘General Medicine’ and the Academic Council of the Faculty of Medicine.

Since 2005, Sergei Shcherbak has been the chief medical officer at City Hospital No 40. This is one of the largest hospitals in St Petersburg where high-tech medical care is provided. This includes using the latest robotic technologies. Here, the regional vascular centre of high-tech medical care operates 24/7. The rehabilitation department uses cutting-edge techniques and developments, and devices and robotic rehabilitation treatment systems. At present, City Hospital No 40 receives patients with COVID-19 in a specially equipped building.

In the laboratory, hospital doctors and scientists of St Petersburg University are implementing joint research projects. Today these are genetic studies of the risks of catching coronavirus. Earlier, they studied ways to diagnose and prevent hereditary diseases during pregnancy planning.

City Hospital No 40 is a long-standing partner of St Petersburg University. University scientists, together with the centre’s doctors, carry out research at the premises of the medical centre. The clinical genetic research sector operates here. It is a laboratory that makes it possible to conduct a large amount of research for the early diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases. These include: diseases of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease; and a number of cardiovascular diseases including acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction. The result of joint research by hospital specialists and scientists of St Petersburg University is a real help to patients.
