St Petersburg University and St Petersburg Electrotechnical University have developed a joint online course on biomedicine

"The Development of Mobile Health Monitoring Systems" online course consists of five modules, each covering a particular stage in the development of an electrocardiogram monitoring system. It covers a wide range of biomedical engineering problems combined in a common task: to develop a prototype of an ECG wearable monitoring system with built-in data-driven signal processing and analysis. Working on this task throughout the course, students will acquire basic theoretical knowledge and gain hands-on experience in electronics, mathematics, data science and programming. All this gives the students an understanding of what they are doing at each stage and why. It is a motivation to complete the course successfully.

The programming assignments that must be completed to be issued a certificate are quite interesting and unusual. They allow you to immerse yourself in the subject matter and experience in practice the difficulties of recording, processing and analysing biomedical signals and data. At the same time, pieces of hardware and software, as well as the data sets used in this course are the same components that the course developers use in their work to develop prototypes for solving tasks in science and engineering.

In addition to providing students with general knowledge and fundamental training in the engineering topics highlighted in the modules, the course is aimed at the development of specific practical skills. As the authors see it, the goal and the uniqueness of the course is to complement fundamental university education by gaining experience in a real project within the chosen profession.
