St Petersburg University launches a new master’s programme “Advanced Mathematics”

As part of its growth plans, St Petersburg University is delighted to announce its new master’s programme “Advanced Mathematics”. It will start in September 2019.

This unique two-year programme is aimed at training professional researchers in mathematics and theoretical computer science, as well as specialists from industrial companies. It will allow students to customise their own course programme. Typical master’s programmes specialise in a single area such as theoretical mathematics. This programme offers a broad variety of courses ranging from mathematics and theoretical computer science to their applications (e.g., there will be courses in data science provided by Yandex).

This new master's programme is an ideal solution for those who are looking to expand their horizons. In order to carry out such an ambitious task, the lecturing staff will consist of the foremost experts. They have previously worked in the world’s leading institutions such as: Université Paris Diderot; École Normal Supérieure (Lyon); Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (Bonn); and Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada). Moreover, courses are taught not only by the regular staff of the programme, but also by other leading researchers, in particular from the Steklov Institute of Mathematics at St Petersburg. As a result, the students will experience the famous Russian mathematical tradition, while the programme adopts the best international teaching practices.

This master’s programme has a close connection with the Chebyshev Laboratory, headed by the Fields Medalist Stanislav Smirnov. The programme including all the classrooms, lecturer's offices and the laboratory are located in one building. This creates a unique research atmosphere. Students are welcome to join the laboratory's research seminars with prominent guest lecturers from all over the world. Tuition fees will be waived for the most talented international students. Also, the programme has multiple sponsors. An example is that Gazprom Neft provides scholarships to selected students.

“Our main goal was to "reboot" the teaching of mathematics for students of all levels. Mathematics is constantly developing, and even the views on classical areas are changing. We wanted therefore to make the curriculum very broad, flexible, and adaptable both to those who want to study pure mathematics, and to those interested in its applications. Besides redesigning the curriculum, we attracted many new professors from Russia and abroad. The new programme is situated in the historical centre of St. Petersburg. This is good culturally, and also allows close collaboration with mathematicians at the leading research centres”.

Prof. Stanislav Smirnov, head of the interdisciplinary Chebyshev Laboratory

Prospective graduates of the programme will be able to choose either to continue their research in PhD programmes at the best universities in the world or a career in industry.  In particular, the Chebyshev Laboratory has strong ties with leading Russian and international industrial and IT companies. These include Gazprom Neft, Yandex, Huawei and JetBrains, which are interested in attracting promising employees.
