St Petersburg University will promote teaching of the Russian language in Palestine

Delegation of Al-Istiqlal University (Palestine) has visited St Petersburg University to discuss prospects of interuniversity cooperation, development of academic mobility and teaching Russian as a foreign language programmes.

Mohamed Halaseh, Dean of Scientific Centres at Al-Istiqlal University, expressed interest in developing of bilateral cooperation with SPbU and presented to Russian colleagues educational programmes of Al-Istiqlal University. ‘Our graduates work in security structures — this is our main specialisation. Despite military orientation of the education, Al-Istiqlal University has five programmes for civilians’, noted Mohamed Halaseh. He also told that purpose of the visit was to establish contacts with Russian universities for development of academic mobility programmes, exchange of knowledge in the field of information technologies and promotion of the Russian language at Al-Istiqlal University.

Al-Istiqlal University has been conducting significant and diverse work on promotion of the Russian language and culture in Palestine for several years. At the premises of Al-Istiqlal University the Russian language courses, events dedicated to the Russian holidays, literary discussions and other activities held for strengthening of the Russian-Palestinian humanitarian relations are organised.

Deputy Rector for International Affairs Sergey Andryushin spoke about opportunities of studying the Russian language at St Petersburg University.

St Petersburg University is a leader in promoting the Russian language abroad. The Centre of Additional Educational Programmes in the Field of Russian as a Foreign Language provides an opportunity to start learning Russian from the very beginning, elementary level.

‘Beside that, SPbU offers training in the online school format, in which students from anywhere in the world can master courses in any field of study (from technical sciences to humanities) in the Russian language’, noted Sergey Andryushin.

Mohamed Nadjagra, Director of the Russian Language and Culture Centre named after Sergey Yesenin, spoke about work of the Centre. He told that in addition to learning of the language, students are acquainted with the Russian culture, literature and history. Training is divided into two parts: during the first semester students study Russian in Palestine, and during the second they learn vocation-related subjects at Southwest State University in Kursk, Russia.

The historical ties between our nations pushes us to strengthen relationships with Russia. St Petersburg University is a vital part of the Russian culture, science and art. We hope that you support the development of our Centre of Russian as a foreign language, and we also believe in fruitful cooperation with your University in other scientific areas.

Following the meeting, the parties discussed possibility of signing an agreement between St Petersburg University, Al-Istiqlal University and the Russian Language and Culture Centre named after Sergey Yesenin.
