Students of St Petersburg University won the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMC) 2018
The student team of St Petersburg University won the annual mathematical Olympiad International Mathematics Competition (IMC), which ended at the end of July in Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria).
The team of St Petersburg University for several years in a row is among the top three student teams participating in the Olympics. This year, the University team won the competition having outrun 70 national teams from all over the world. According to the results of the overall test, which summarises the three best results and the average score for the team, the students-mathematicians Daniil Klyuev, Pavel Gubkin, Stanislav Ershov, Nikita Dobronravov and Ignat Sokolov scored 335 points.
In addition, one of the members of the team — a student of St Petersburg University Daniil Klyuev became the absolute champion of the Olympiad in the individual classification, gaining 97 points. The young man has won the IMC victory for the third time already — earlier he won the competitions of 2015 and 2017.
The mathematical Olympiad traditionally lasts for two days. In each round, students within five hours independently solve five tasks in algebra, analysis, geometry and combinatorics. Assignments for the Olympiad throughout the year are sent by enthusiasts from different countries, after which representatives of the teams choose the best. By the way, this year the students solved one of the tasks from St Petersburg.
«In my opinion, the tasks were about the same level of complexity as last year but then we could not get around the Israelis. This time we overtook them by a few dozen points», said Daniil Klyuev the St Petersburg University student and winner of IMC 2018.
