BRICS: From an Object of Investment to an International Actor
Dear colleagues, we extend a warm invitation for you to attend the fourth seminar of the Geopolitical Observatory for Russia’s Key Issues (G.O.R.K.I.).
"BRIC", an acronym coined in 2001 by economist Jim O’Neill, initially represented the emerging economic powerhouses of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and later, South Africa. What began as a concept to highlight the collective economic potential of these nations evolved into a formalised association in 2006, with the first BRICS summit held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009. Since then, BRICS has steadily grown in prominence to become a platform not only for economic cooperation but also for political dialogue and cultural exchange among its member states.
The main topic of discussion this time is the legal status of BRICS: whether this alliance will continue to be an inter-state informal association or it will acquire its own charter and become a full-fledged international organisation.
The aim of the seminar is to examine various aspects of BRICS cooperation. Interactive lectures by Karin Kneissl, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre, and other experts in the BRICS topic will be delivered on the first day. The event will also feature Alexey Kulapin, Director General of the Russian Energy Agency under the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation.
The second day will be devoted to modelling the upcoming BRICS Summit chaired by the Russian Federation, which will take place in Kazan on 22-24 October 2024. By taking on the role of the heads of BRICS member states, the participants will explore different ways to strengthen BRICS solidarity and enhance its role as a catalyst for positive change on the global stage.
Please note that registration for the seminar is required.
