St Petersburg University has signed a cooperation agreement with the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in the Russian Federation and Termex Corporation LLC. The agreement outlines plans for collaborative efforts to promote the Russian language and Russian education in Africa while simultaneously fostering interest in Tanzanian history and culture within Russia.

The document was signed by Sergey Andryushin, Acting Vice-Rector for International Affairs of St Petersburg University; Valery Gavrilyuk, Honorary Consul of Tanzania in St Petersburg; and Vladimir Kalina, Director of Termex Corporation LLC. The signing ceremony took place at the Artmuza Museum of Contemporary Art during a private preview of the exhibition Dreams of Africa, which was dedicated to Tanzania’s Independence Day.

In 2024, St Petersburg University opens 11 Russian language teaching centres in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The agreement is aimed at developing information, scientific, and educational interaction between the states, as well as promoting academic programmes and research projects of St Petersburg University in Tanzania. The partnership envisages joint work on the creation of training courses and individual disciplines, alongside academic programmes for training specialists in the interests of Russian-Tanzanian economic cooperation.

The partners intend to focus on increasing the interest of Tanzanian students and scholars in the Russian language, Russian education and science, and the academic programmes of the University. They also aim to foster interest among students and faculty of St Petersburg University in studying the history, culture, economy, and other aspects of the social life of the United Republic of Tanzania. Additionally, St Petersburg University plans to organise Swahili language teaching, host joint conferences, seminars, and roundtables, and implement scientific and educational projects.

St Petersburg University places great emphasis on the study of Africa, its individual countries, and languages. Tanzania is one of our most active partners on this continent, and we are keen to further develop our cooperation.

Sergey Andryushin, Acting Vice-Rector for International Affairs of St Petersburg University

"Last year, with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, the University opened the Centre for Open Education, which helps promote the Russian language among Tanzanians. I hope that in future we will see them among the applicants to St Petersburg University and other Russian universities," said Sergey Andryushin.

Representatives of the Embassy and Termex Corporation will be able to: organise internships and training for students of the University; participate in career days; and take part in the work of teaching methodology committees, methodology councils, councils of academic programmes at St Petersburg University, as well as state examination committees and assessment boards. They will also have the opportunity to propose topics for research and graduation projects to the students, and to act as their scientific advisers and reviewers.
