Meeting of the Book Club of the Faculty of Foreign Languages at SPbU

4 April 2025
Time: 6 pm
M. Gorky Scientific Library Reading Hall, 7-9 Universitetskaya Embankment, St Petersburg

St Petersburg University will host another meeting of the Book Club, dedicated to Spanish language literature and its translation into Russian.

The book Club gatherings broaden participants’ minds, introduce them to world literature, and provide an opportunity to meet with scholars, literary critics, translators, writers, poets, and literary theorists.

We will discuss Spanish language literature as a whole — its unique features and challenges — as well as recently published translations by Darya Sinitsyna ("The Autumn of the Patriarch" and "Until August" by Gabriel García Márquez, "The Ill-Fated Peregrinations of Fray Servando" by Reinaldo Arenas, "The Time of the Hero" by Mario Vargas Llosa, "The Sound of Things Falling" by Juan Gabriel Vásquez, "Chiquita" by Antonio Orlando Rodríguez, "Three Trapped Tigers" by Guillermo Cabrera Infante, and others). The art of translation and love for prose fiction will be another topic for the dialogue. Participants are invited to choose any of the above-mentioned books to read in advance.

Speaker

Darya Sinitsyna — PhD in Philology, graduate of the SPbU Faculty of Philology, lecturer at the Department of Romance Philology (Faculty of Philology, SPbU), literary translator from Spanish, and simultaneous interpreter for negotiations, conferences, and art events. She is a winner of the Inolittl award of the "Foreign Literature" journal, the IsLa-HISPÁNICA literary award, and the "Yasnaya Polyana" award.

She has published translations of such Latin American and Spanish authors as Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Reinaldo Arenas, Hernán Rivera Letelier, Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Lydia Cabrera, and others.
