Programme description

The bachelor’s programme "Ottoman Studies (Languages, History and Culture of Ottoman Türkiye)" with additional qualification "Translator/Interpreter" is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of political, economic, social, cultural, ethno-religious, linguistic, and other characteristics of Türkiye and the Middle East countries, alongside with in-depth study of ancient and medieval Eastern languages.

The educational programme is aimed at prospective students who wish to build a successful career in various institutions in Russia and abroad, departments of Russian and international companies and organisations, as well as in government bodies and administrative agencies.

Upon completing the programme graduates will be awarded two diplomas of St Petersburg University: a higher education diploma and a professional retraining diploma ("Translator/Interpreter")

  • Students of the programme will be awarded the additional qualification of "Translator/Interpreter" that significantly expands the graduate’s professional competencies and enhances their employability.
  • Language training (Turkish, Ottoman, Arabic, Persian)
  • Students of the programme will also study additional European language (German, French or specialised English (for orientalists))
  • Unique electronic resources in Russian, Eastern, and Western languages, as well as access to the specialised collection of the M. Gorky Scientific Library of SPbU, that includes: over 300,000 academic, educational, literary, and periodical books in all languages of the regions studied at SPbU, a collection of ancient manuscripts and woodblock printed texts, rare and unique books and lithographs.
  • Students of the programme will gain an opportunity to continue studies in one of the graduate’s programmes at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies.
Teaching staff
  • Konstantin Zhukov — PhD in History, Associate Professor at the Department of History of the Middle East Countries at SPbU. He is also one of the department’s leading experts in the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye. K. Zhukov is an author of over 100 published research papers in Russian, English, French, and Turkish, including 2 monographs and several textbooks
  • Aleksandra Zheveleva — PhD in History, Associate Professor at the Department of History of the Middle East Countries at SPbU. She is also one of the department’s leading experts in the history of the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye. A. Zheveleva has published more than 10 research papers
  • Nikolai Telitsyn — PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Turkic Philology. He is also a member of the Bureau of the Russian Committee of Turkologists. N. Telitsyn holds position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the "Russian Turkology" scientific journal
