The undergraduate programme "Korean Philology" aims to provide students with a holistic understanding of the linguistic, cultural, political, economic, social, ethnic, religious, literary, and other characteristics of the region.
The programme is designed for prospective students who wish to build a successful career in various divisions of Russian and international companies engaged in cooperation with the countries of the Korean Peninsula.
Upon completing the programme graduates will be awarded two diplomas of St Petersburg University: a higher education diploma and a professional retraining diploma ("Translator/Interpreter").
- Professor Sergei Kurbanov — Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor (academic rank), and Head of the Department of Korean Studies. Professor Kurbanov is an author of more than 150 research publications, including 9 monographs, on Korean history, social thought, culture, ethnography, politics, and economy, as well as on theoretical issues of historical science. He is also an Editor-in-Chief of the "Proceedings of the Centre for Korean Language and Culture" journal. Member of the editorial board of the "International Journal of Korean History" and the "Eurasia Cultura" journal
- Inna Tsoi — PhD in Philology, Associate Professor at the Department of Korean Studies. Professor Tsoi specialises in Korean language and modern Korean literature. She teaches courses on various aspects of the Korean language and history of modern Korean literature, as well as translation workshops. Professor is also a member of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe
- Anastasia Guryeva — PhD in Philology, Associate Professor at the Department of Korean Studies. Professor Guryeva teaches courses on various aspects of the Korean language, Korean literature, and a special course on the book culture of the Far East, as well as translation workshops. She is an author of over 85 research publications in Russian, English, and Korean, including textbooks and literary translations. A. Guryeva is a member of the SPbU Research Committee for Asian and African Studies, the Association for Korean Studies in Europe, and the Association of Korean Literature Studies (the Republic of Korea)
- Jeong Yang-Ok — Senior Lecturer at the Department of Korean Studies. She teaches courses on spoken Korean. Jeong Yang-Ok is also a master of Korean traditional dance and Head of the Traditional Korean Dance Student Club at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies
- Programme is aimed to train specialists with professional skills (including cultural and linguistic competencies corresponding to the major) for research, teaching and managerial activities in the field of Oriental studies
- Students of the programme will be awarded the additional qualification of "Translator/Interpreter" that significantly expands the graduate’s professional competencies and enhances their employability
- Extensive language training (Korean)
- Students of the programme will also study additional European language (German, French or specialised English (for orientalists))
- Unique electronic resources in Russian, Eastern, and Western languages, as well as access to the specialised collection of the M. Gorky Scientific Library of SPbU, that includes: over 300,000 academic, educational, literary, and periodical books in all languages of the regions studied at SPbU, a collection of ancient manuscripts and woodblock printed texts, rare and unique books and lithographs
- Students of the programme will gain an opportunity to apply for studies in one of the graduate’s programmes at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies
