St Petersburg University among the leaders in the RAEX-2025 subject rankings

According to the RAEX research, 166 universities from 40 regions of the Russian Federation were included in the 2025 subject rankings. St Petersburg University achieved strong results in 13 subject areas. The University ranked second in Russia in the following disciplines: Law, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Linguistics and Foreign Languages, History and Archaeology, Hospitality, and Geography. It also moved up from third to second place in Philology and Journalism compared to the 2024 results. St Petersburg University was ranked third in Psychology, Physics, Sociology, Political Science, and International Relations.

RAEX subject rankings of Russian higher education institutions

St Petersburg University ranked fourth in Information Technology and fifth in Economics and Management. In Medicine, the University placed sixth, becoming one of only two non-medical institutions included in the top 20 of the subject ranking. This year, for the first time, the University participated in the subject ranking for Petroleum Engineering, where it was ranked sixth.

The RAEX Subject Rankings are the most authoritative independent rankings in Russia, assessing the quality of specialist education across various subject areas. Inclusion in these rankings reflects federal recognition of the University’s high standards in education and research.

The RAEX ranking system evaluates universities across three key factors: educational performance, research output, and public engagement. Evaluation criteria include the quality of applicants, academic staff potential, competitiveness of master’s programmes, scientific publications and citations, training of highly qualified personnel, contribution to regional development, and other significant indicators.
