TASS: St Petersburg University to open round-the-world relay ahead of International Congress of Mathematicians
St Petersburg University will open the round-the-world relay to mark the International Congress of Mathematicians in July this year. The event will start in St Petersburg on 24 March, and the symbolic flame will circle the globe and return to St Petersburg by the start of the forum on 6 July, said Anastasia Yarmosh, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Partnership, on Monday.
'Mathematical centres all over the world will begin to pass on a kind of mathematical fire to one another. We start here in St Petersburg on 24 March, then we will pass this flame and the heart of the future mathematical congress on to other participants, and through Europe, America, Asia, circling the globe. On the day of the Assembly of the International Mathematical Union, the flame will return to us,' said Ms Yarmosh at a press conference at the Information Centre of the TASS Russian News Agency in St Petersburg.
In addition, St Petersburg University will host nine of the more than 50 satellite events included in the official programme of this year's International Congress of Mathematicians. These include an international conference on game theory and the 'Petersburg positivity' conference on order structures in algebra, analysis, and logic.
This year, the International Congress of Mathematicians in St Petersburg will be held from 6 to 14 July. The event was first held in 1897 in Zurich. Since then, the congress has gathered in various cities around the world every four years, acting as the world's largest event in the world of mathematics. In July 2018, at the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union in Brazil, Russia and St Petersburg received a majority vote in the competition for the right to host the congress in 2022.
