Hydrometeorology

05.03.04 In English and Russian

Level of education Bachelor

Type of instruction Full-time

Duration 4 years

Programme description
  • The bachelor’s programme ‘Hydrometeorology’ makes it possible for students to master both general basic courses in geography and hydrometeorology, and obtain knowledge in a particular area. This approach forms a broad scientific and professional outlook, traditional for St Petersburg University. This enables graduates to succeed in various fields of activity.
  • The training process focuses on the practical aspects of hydrometeorology, thereby emphasising the particular importance of the issues that it solves both for the population and for the whole state. Among the issues studied are: weather and water forecasts; climate change and their impact on our lives; ice reconnaissance in the Arctic; and the safety of oil rigs on the shelf to name just a few.
  • The theoretical skills and knowledge gained are consolidated during practical training and internships held in Russia and abroad.
  • The programme is designed to train experts in hydrometeorology who have advanced skills in: making observations, analysing and summarising hydrometeorological data; and applying methods for calculating and forecasting the characteristics of the hydrometeorological regime. The programme provides all the necessary knowledge and experience to work in: the field; on ships and weather stations of the system of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet) and other ministries and departments; and relevant production and research institutions.
