Programme description
  • The bachelor’s programme ‘Russian as a Foreign Language’ is designed to train experts who know various methods, principles and techniques of teaching Russian as a foreign language
  • The programme is unique in that it combines a fundamental theoretical education in the history and current state of the Russian language, and Russian and foreign literature with special disciplines in teaching Russian as a foreign language that are aimed at the practical integration of students into the relevant professional field
  • The effectiveness of combining theoretical and practical training of future specialists is confirmed by many years of experience in implementing this programme at St Petersburg University. Graduates of the programme are therefore ready to carry out professional activities at: general educational institutions; organisations of additional education for schoolchildren; and general Russian language courses for foreigners

Our advantages
  • The programme provides an in-depth study of: the linguistic fundamentals of Russian as a foreign language; and the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language. This makes it possible to train highly qualified specialists in this field.
  • Students acquire knowledge of: the specific features of Russian grammar and syntax relevant for teaching Russian as a foreign language; and the fundamentals of linguoculturology and intercultural communication. They have an opportunity to choose elective courses that help develop their practical skills and modern professional competencies.
  • In the process of training future foreign specialists, a high level of Russian language proficiency is formed. This enables communicative tasks in the field of professional communication to be solved. Considerable attention is paid to improving the level of knowledge of foreign languages, which will facilitate communication problem-solving in the field of professional communication.
  • Graduates possess the skills of using business Russian, and public speaking and writing. They understand the importance of Russian as the state language.
  • Graduates speak English at a level comparable to B2 CEFR.

Career opportunities

Graduates can work: as teachers of Russian as a foreign language; as research workers at libraries; as research fellows at the Institute of Linguistic Studies; on radio and television; in business centres related to the reception and support of foreign citizens (scientific, business, tourist, cultural and educational activities); and at secondary and higher educational institutions. If the graduate has been issued a certificate of the completion of the non-degree academic programme ‘Language Testing’, he/she can work as a tester of Russian as a foreign language.
