Lawyers from Hamburg and St Petersburg to conduct a unique course in international economic law at St Petersburg University

St Petersburg University has launched a unique series of online training seminars in 'International Economic Law'. The programme has been implemented by St Petersburg University; the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, a long-standing partner of the University; the University of Hamburg; and the German Academic Exchange Service.

Lectures will be delivered by professors from St Petersburg University, the Faculty of Law of the University of Hamburg and practicing lawyers from Germany.

The programme is the only German-language course in Russia on this subject and it has no rivals. The participants of the course will have a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the German training system for lawyers, which is one of the most efficient in the world.

Academic supervisor of the programme Marina Trunk-Fedorova

The course starts at the end of October and finishes in July. It includes 16 lecture blocks – a total of 286 academic hours. The course covers aspects of legal regulation of international economic relations and business activities. The subjects include international tax law, competition and antitrust law, economic criminal law, company law, international transport and maritime law.

Marina Trunk-Fedorova emphasised that the programme will be useful not only for lawyers, but also for economists and entrepreneurs who are involved in foreign economic activity and cooperate with German and other European partners. Moreover, the lectures will be of interest to anyone who is interested in German law in general. This year, the course will be held in an online format. The organisers are therefore expecting students not only from St Petersburg, but also from other cities and countries.

Course programme

There are only two requirements for potential students: basic legal knowledge and German language proficiency at B1-B2 level. However, no confirmation of the language level with certificates is required: students should assess their own abilities as all lectures will be delivered in German. Students will have the opportunity to master German legal terminology and academic style. This is particularly important for those who would like to continue their studies in Germany.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate from the Chamber of Commerce and the University of Hamburg and a certificate from St Petersburg University. Also, graduates of the International Economic Law course who have a master’s or a specialist degree in law may apply for the Master of Laws - L.L.M. programme at the University of Hamburg. Traditionally, the programme lasts for two semesters, but the course taken at St Petersburg University can be recognised as the first semester (provided students have successfully passed their entrance exams).

Candidates are selected for the programme following an interview. Applications are being accepted until 20 October.
