Researcher from St Petersburg University wins the law award of St Petersburg and becomes the best teacher of digital law in Russia

Vladislav Arkhipov, Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law at St Petersburg University, Counsel in the global law firm Dentons received two awards in the sphere of law. Both award ceremonies were timed to coincide with Lawyer Day.

The governor of St Petersburg Alexander Beglov congratulated the law community of St Petersburg on the professional holiday and opened the online award ‘Justitia’ ceremony. ‘Lawyer Day is very special for St Petersburg,’ he said. ‘It is in our city that many law institutions have been set up. St Petersburg law school is highly appreciated all over the world. Many outstanding legal experts and politicians were taught here. The profession of a lawyer requires not only profound knowledge and impeccable reputation, but also civil responsibility, justness and wisdom. These days, legal support is highly demanded everywhere. Your help is indispensable for the government.’

The prize ‘Justitia’ of the regional branch of the ‘Association of Lawyers of Russia’ for St Petersburg and Leningrad Region is awarded annually for considerable contribution into development of the institutions of the democratic society and constitutional state, and active professional and public work.

‘For many years our prize “Justitia” has been honourable for the lawyers of St Petersburg and Leningrad Region,’ said Nikolay Kropachev, Rector of the University and Chairman of the Association of Lawyers of St Petersburg and Leningrad Region.

In 2020 we faced multiple challenges, which we managed to overcome thanks to the team spirit of the Law community.

He underlined that this year the award was given to professionals who consolidated the authority of the profession of lawyer by persevering in their academic and public work despite all the difficulties.

The prize ‘Justitia’ for ‘Academic credentials’ was awarded to Vladislav Arkhipov, Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law at St Petersburg University. ‘It is a great honour and also a great responsibility, because acknowledgement of the achievements at such level entrusts the laureate with the commitment to be up to par and move forward. My academic work is devoted to the digital transformation of society, which has gained speed due to the current circumstances. Apparently, this field of study is one of the reasons I am speaking here now,’ the laureate said.

On the same day, Vladislav Arkhipov won the prize ‘Digital Lawyer of the Year’, which is part of the Runet Prize 2020 for ‘Best teacher of digital law’. The prize is awarded for achieving high results in the sphere of pedagogy to the teachers who realise educational programmes in the field of digital and information law.

According to Irina Rukavishnikova, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, the role of digitalisation is constantly growing. It is becoming an integral part of the work of a lawyer. ‘The pace at which digital technologies are being introduced into legal life is accelerating every day. Legal regulation of the digital economy is one of the most actual though difficult tasks of law making and law enforcement’, she said.

Vladislav Arkhipov is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at St Petersburg University. From the beginning of his academic career, he has been working on classical problems of the theory and philosophy of law, and methodology of legal science. The main area of his research work, teaching and practical activities is the legal problems with innovation that occur due to the development of the Internet, gaming industry, and digital technologies in general. He is both an author and co-author of the University online courses ‘Legal Regulation of Relations in the Internet: Russian Perspective’, ‘Gaming Industry: Key Legal Challenges’, ‘Fundamentals of Law’, and ‘Theory of Law and State’.

In 2018 for the development of online course ‘Legal Regulation of Relations in the Internet: Russian Perspective’ Vladislav Arkhipov and Viktor Naumov were awarded the St Petersburg Government Prize for outstanding achievements in higher and secondary vocational education in the category ‘Development of innovation activities in an educational institution’.
