A Student from Mongolia: "You Should Love the Language"

The popularity of learning Russian is growing around the world, despite any international developments. Foreigners are looking for a way to start doing so both in remote and in full-time formats. The Preparatory Department is a good choice for people who want to learn the language, learn Russian history and learn to understand Russian people. Tuguldur Malar, a student from Mongolia, shared his impressions of his experience as a student in the department, his plans for the future and his thoughts about how St Petersburg University teachers helped him learn the Russian language.

Why did you decide to study Russian at St Petersburg University?

In 2018, my elder sister graduated from this university with honours, and now she is very successful in her life. Also, St Petersburg University, with more than 300 years of history, is one of the top universities in Russia.

What useful skills in learning the Russian language have you picked up while studying in the Preparatory Course?

I really want to thank all my teachers from the bottom of my heart. They are always supportive. I have enhanced my speaking skills by openly talking with them during the lessons on different interesting topics.

What problems have you encountered while learning the language? How have you dealt with them?

I would say Russian grammar is the hardest one. The more you practice, though, the better it gets.

What places would you like to visit in St Petersburg? Which place would you like to return to again and again?

Right now I’m in St Petersburg, and I would like to visit all the historical places in the city because it is the cultural capital of Russia. I think I will never get bored of going to the Hermitage. Every time I go there I learn something new about the arts, culture and history.

Tell us about your hobbies. What do you like doing in your free time?

I love sports. In my free time, I run and exercise in nature. Especially now that the weather is getting warmer, I’m going to spend more time outside. I also love boxing and cycling. I think everyone needs to take care of their health and wellbeing.

What advice would you give to students just starting to learn Russian?

I think, most importantly, you should love the language. When you really like doing something, eventually you will be good at it. Watch your favourite movies in Russian. Having Russian friends is also a good idea — it helped me to get to know the Russian culture and cuisine more.

Would you like to continue your studies at St Petersburg University?

I am definitely going to continue my studies at this university. I’m going to start the bachelor’s programme in Physical Training and Sport in September. I got a full scholarship by winning a contest organised by St Petersburg University this year. I have never been so happy. I was delighted to know that I got the scholarship. Plus, I would like to use this opportunity to thank my teachers and family for believing in me and helping me all this time.
