Online lecture

Gaito Gazdanov, "An Evening with Claire" and other works

4 December 2024
Time: 8 pm

St Petersburg University and its Representative Office in Barcelona invite you to the online lecture "Gaito Gazdanov, 'An Evening with Claire' and other works" dedicated to the Russian émigré writer in France and one of the brightest representatives of Russian literature of the XX century. The lecture will be delivered by Nina Shcherbak, Candidate of Philology.

Gazdanov's works combine philosophical depth with vivid imagery and an almost mystical atmosphere. Born in St Petersburg in 1903, Gazdanov lived through the civil war and found himself in Paris in the 1920s. He is considered a distinctive writer in Russian literature, skilfully blending realistic detail with existential philosophy.

Gaito Gazdanov's style has often been compared to the prose of Marcel Proust and Franz Kafka, as well as the works of the "Lost Generation." In his books, Gazdanov explores themes of fate, memory, love and human loneliness. Critics of the time recognised Gazdanov as a talented writer. He published regularly in "Contemporary Notes" and gave lectures on Rosanov, Remizov, Bunin and Mayakovsky. In 1935, Gazdanov wanted to return to his homeland and asked Maxim Gorky for help, but Gorky was unable to help him.

Lecturer

Nina Shcherbak, Associate Professor in the Department of English Philology and Cultural Linguistics at St Petersburg University, Master of Arts (the United Kingdom), a writer and screenwriter. She is also a scriptwriter for science television shows, author of fifteen monographs, and books on linguistics, literature, language philosophy, and English literature.

The lecture will be held online in Russian with simultaneous interpreting into Spanish as part of the celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of Russia’s oldest university — St Petersburg University.
