Programme description
  • The undergraduate degree programme «Tibetan and Mongolian Philology » (with the additional qualification «Specialist in the field of translation»)" provides students with fundamental knowledge of the languages, literatures, culture, history, ethno-confessional and social traditions, modern political and economic processes of the region, based on a comprehensive study of Eastern languages
  • The educational programme offers applicants professional training in translation, expert consulting, and administrative activities in Russian state organisations and private companies
  • Upon completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the additional qualification ‘Translator/Interpreter’

  • Students have access to unique electronic resources in Russian, Eastern and Western languages, as well as to the faculty branch of the Gorky Scientific Library. The Gorky Scientific Library has a collection of more than 300,000 volumes of scientific, educational and periodical literature, as well as fiction in all languages of the regions studied, a collection of old manuscripts and woodcuts, rare and unique books and lithographs
  • Graduates can apply to Master’s programmes at the SPbU Faculty of Oriental Studies and to other Russian and foreign universities
  • The additional qualification ‘Translator/Interpreter’ significantly broadens the graduate’s professional competencies and enhances their competitiveness in the labour market
Teaching staff
  • Vladimir Uspensky, Doctor of History, Professor in the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies, expert in written artefacts in the Mongolian and Tibetan languages, as well as in the history of Buddhism in Tibet and Mongolia. He is the author of several monographs (including a catalogue of Mongolian manuscripts held in the collection of St Petersburg University) and numerous papers published both in Russia and abroad
  • Maria Petrova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor in the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies, expert in modern Mongolian literature. She teaches Modern Mongolian and Modern Mongolian Literature
  • Kirill Alekseev, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies, expert in medieval Mongolian and Tibetan literature
  •  Maria Smirnova, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor in the Department of Mongolian and Tibetan Studies
