St Petersburg University to train experts in Scandinavian languages

The new bachelor’s programme ‘Scandinavian Languages and Literatures (Swedish and Norwegian)’ provides students with a rigorous general philological and linguistic education following the traditions of the St Petersburg School of Linguistics. Upon graduation, students are awarded additional qualifications: ‘Teacher of Foreign Language and Literature’ and ‘Translator/Interpreter’.

During training, students will acquire: a professional level of proficiency in their chosen language, Norwegian or Swedish; a comprehensive knowledge of the cultural traditions of the nations studied; and a command of modern translation and interpreting technologies. The practice-oriented programme combines theoretical and practical disciplines, such as Consecutive Interpreting, Norwegian Lexicology and Swedish Lexicology, the History of Scandinavian Literature from the 16th to the 21st Centuries, and Country Studies of Norway and Sweden, among others. Students also have access to uniquely designed courses in a number of elective disciplines. The training of future linguists-translators/interpreters is based on the latest achievements in the methodology and didactics of foreign language teaching, and on many years of research and practical experience. The lecturers of the programme are experts in Scandinavian philology, recognised in Russia and abroad, with extensive teaching and research experience, honoured practising translators and interpreters, and winners of prestigious literary awards.

St Petersburg University offers training in related fields, including:

  • Spanish Language, Literature and Translation/Interpreting (with additional qualifications ‘Teacher of Foreign Language and Literature’ / ‘Translator/Interpreter’)
  • Translation /Interpreting and Translation Studies (English and Romance Languages)
  • Theory and Practice of Intercultural Communication (English) (with additional qualifications ‘English Teacher’ / ‘Translator/Interpreter’)

Graduates of the programme will be able to work successfully in research institutes, educational institutions, cultural centres and museums, archives and libraries, tourism companies, international companies, publishing houses, and the mass media.
