Exploration and Exploitation of Marine Mineral Resources of the World Ocean

Programme description
  • Marine geological exploration, i.e. exploration and extraction of minerals, has undergone tremendous progress recently across the world, both within the economic zones of coastal states and in the International Seabed Area 
  • The mission of the programme is to improve the expert knowledge in geology and other related fields of science. The programme is up-to-date as there is a shortage of high-calibre personnel capable of competently carrying out the work, selecting the necessary methods and processing the obtained material. The head of the programme is Georgii Cherkashev 
  • Students have the opportunity to learn from a wide range of specialist teachers with real-world experience in marine geology, including: tectonics, magmatism and sedimentation, minerals of the ocean; and related sciences, including: oceanology, marine ecology, marine technology (exploration and production), international maritime law (the Convention on the Law of the Sea and the rules, regulations and procedures to regulate prospecting, exploration and exploitation of marine minerals in the International Seabed Area, and the economics of mineral resources) 
  • English proficiency in their area of study is essential for students to be enrolled in the programme 
  • Apart from a strong emphasis placed on geology, the programme spans such key topics as cutting-edge marine technologies, marine ecology and oceanography, international maritime law and the global economy of mineral resources 
  • The programme also aims to develop a range of comprehensive multidisciplinary skills in geology, geophysics, ecology, marine technology, and international law. This set of disciplines is unique and is taught only at St Petersburg University 
  • All applicants should have and/or be receiving higher education
