The Preparatory Department (for International Applicants)

Programme description

The programme aims to prepare international applicants to enter St Petersburg University to pursue degree programmes in Russian in all areas of study. 

Students are prepared to pass the test in Russian as a foreign language (TRKI-1 level) and entrance exams in subjects, depending on the chosen profile: 

  • Natural science — mathematics, physics, chemistry 
  • Engineering and technology — mathematics, physics, computer science 
  • Humanities — social science, history, literature 
  • Economics — social science, history, mathematics 
  • Medicine and biology — physics, chemistry, biology 

The first semester provides training in the Russian language. It has 24 hours per week. The second semester includes 15 hours of Russian per week. It will also introduce a course "Introduction to the Language of the Specialty". The course covers issues relating to the basic terminology and grammatical structures of the academic language of three disciplines in their area of specialisation. 

  • Practical classes are held in the Petrodvorets Training and Research Complex of St Petersburg University. Students can obtain first-hand experience of how our education system is organised and research laboratories work. Students are also offered accommodation in the halls of residence in Peterhof
  • The head of the programme is Natalia Bure, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Philology at St Petersburg University. Among the educators are associate professors from the faculties at St Petersburg University
  • St Petersburg University provides full visa support to international citizens
Required documents
  • A copy of a foreign passport valid for more than 18 months from the date of intended entry into the Russian Federation 
  • High School Leaving Certificate
