Geophysics and Computer Technologies in Data Analysis

In Russian

Level of education Master

Type of instruction Full-time

Duration 2 years

Programme description
  • The Master’s Degree Programme «Geophysics and Computer Technologies in Data Analysis» is aimed at training specialists in the field of geophysics, capable of successfully solving problems of prospecting and exploration of mineral resources, as well as tasks related to engineering surveys, using modern computer technologies such as machine learning, neural networks, and other approaches from the field of data science at the stage of processing and interpretation of geophysical data
  • This programme covers all the leading geophysical survey methods — seismic, electrical, magnetic, gravity and GIS — and their integration to solve specific industry and research problems. The programme also places great emphasis on exploring current issues related to offshore exploration
  • The programme covers geophysical methods at various stages of their implementation: theoretical foundations, field work, field data quality assessment, data processing, geological and geophysical modelling and interpretation. Graduates can work in organisations of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation, in exploration and production companies, in design and survey organisations, in vertically integrated oil and gas companies, in academic and departmental research organisations solving basic and applied geological and oil and gas problems
  • Graduates will be prepared to work in production related to mineral prospecting and exploration, surveying, research laboratories, data centres, and manufacturing
Main courses
  • Petrophysics
  • Geophysical equipment
  • Seismic survey
  • Seismic data processing
  • Well logging
  • Geological interpretation of seismic data
  • Geoelectrics
  • Potential methods
  • Mathematical foundations of signal processing
  • Python programming
  • Data science
  • Seismic data processing
  • Data processing and analysis with Python
  • Integrated interpretation of geophysical data
  • Marine geophysics
  • Aerogeophysics
  • Ore geophysics
  • Oil and gas geophysics
  • Engineering geophysics
International relations

The programme offers extensive opportunities for international collaboration with educational and scientific institutions around the world.

Career opportunities

Internships:

The programme includes a research and industrial placement during which the student will acquire specific practical skills to solve modern problems in geophysics, oil and gas geology, ore geology, engineering geology or fundamental problems related to the internal structure of the Earth, depending on the student's preferences. The content of the internship programme is individual for each student and is determined by the nature of the company where the internship is carried out.

The programme also provides the opportunity for teaching practice, enabling graduates to teach in secondary and higher education institutions in the future.

Career opportunities:

The choice of future career depends on a graduate's personal preferences. Depending on the chosen specialisation and interests, the graduate may be involved in office analytical work, data processing, software development and new algorithms for data processing and interpretation, or conversely, focus on field research. Many of our geophysics graduates go on to become senior executives and top management in large organisations. Some choose self-employment or a freelance career.

Primary career paths:

  • Engineer
  • Geophysicist
  • Researcher
  • University lecturer
  • Field team leader

Specialisations:

  • Seismic surveyor
  • Electrical surveyor
  • Gravity surveyor
  • Magnetic surveyor
  • Petroleum geophysicist
  • Geophysical engineer
  • Geophysics data interpreter
