- The programme has been designed together with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). It is aimed at training specialists who will be able to develop mathematical models for modern equipment. They will take part in large-scale international projects in the field of nuclear physics, including the Mega-Science project for creating the NICA collider at the JINR.
- The programme is designed to train master’s students who will be engaged in independent activities to apply methods of applied mathematics and physics, mathematical modelling, and information technology in such main areas of science and technology as: nuclear physics; elementary particle physics; and accelerator physics.
- The programme is aimed at training specialists in the field of research, analytical, design, developmental, innovation, production, and managerial activities.
- The programme is implemented with the help of the unique physical facilities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, and with technical and methodological support from the JINR University Centre.
- The first year of study is at St Petersburg University; the third semester and pre-graduation practice is carried out at the JINR.
- Students of the programme receive an additional scholarship.
- In the third year of the programme students attend classes and complete their internships at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.
- This programme is designed to provide students with: skills in application and experimental procedures; knowledge of models, methods and facilities for basic and applied research in science, technology, engineering as well as in the area of knowledge intensive industries; and knowledge of the principles underlying all charged particle accelerators. Students are trained: to use techniques in the accelerator charged particle dynamics simulation; to implement the applied mathematics approach and the methods of mathematical physics applied to physical problems in the fields of nuclear physics and elementary particle physics; to operate automated control systems of research accelerators and research centers; and to deliver IT solutions to experimental physical problems.
- The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) unites the scientific resources of 18 member countries and 6 associate members: the Republic of Azerbaijan; the Republic of Armenia; the Republic of Belarus; the Republic of Bulgaria; the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; Georgia; the Republic of Kazakhstan; the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; the Republic of Cuba; the Republic of Moldova; Mongolia; the Republic of Poland; the Russian Federation; Romania; the Slovak Republic; the Republic of Uzbekistan; Ukraine; and the Czech Republic. At the governmental level, the Institute has concluded Cooperation Agreements with: Hungary, Germany, Egypt, Italy, Serbia and the Republic of South Africa.
- The Institute collaborates with more than 800 research centres and universities in 62 countries throughout the world. Only in Russia – the largest JINR partner – the cooperation is conducted with over 170 research centres, universities, industrial enterprises and firms from 55 Russian cities. Over 260 research centres, universities and industrial enterprises from 10 CIS countries take part in the implementation of the scientific programme of the Institute.
- JINR possesses Observer Status in a number of European scientific structures, in particular, in the strategy working group on physical and engineering sciences of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). JINR is also a member of the Astroparticle Physics European Consortium (APPEC).
- CERN and JINR have mutual Observer Status.
