The bachelor’s programme "Arab History" is aimed at developing in students a holistic understanding of the political, economic, social, cultural, civilisational, ethnic, confessional, and other features of Arab countries. Students also study in depth the classical Arabic language, one of its modern dialects, and one or more European languages.
This academic programme is aimed at applicants who want to build a successful career in: various Russian and international institutions; divisions of Russian and international companies and institutions; state authorities; and administrative institutions.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the additional qualification ‘Translator/Interpreter’.

- The programme trains specialists with the requisite professional skills, including cultural and linguistic ones corresponding to their major. Graduates are ready to conduct research, teaching, and organisational and managerial activities in the field of Asian and African studies

- Students of the programme will also study additional European language (German, French or specialised English (for orientalists))
- Unique electronic resources in Russian, Eastern, and Western languages, as well as access to the specialised collection of the M. Gorky Scientific Library of SPbU, that includes: over 300,000 academic, educational, literary, and periodical books in all languages of the regions studied at SPbU, a collection of ancient manuscripts and woodblock printed texts, rare and unique books and lithographs
- Upon completion of the programme, graduates will have enhanced opportunities to pursue a master’s degree at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies at St Petersburg University
- Nikolai Dyakov — Doctor of History, Honorary Professor of St Petersburg University, Head of the Department of History of the Middle East Countries. His research interests include history, ethnography, culture, and religion of Arab countries, the Muslim Maghreb region, Russia and Arab world relations. Professor Dyakov is an author of over 150 research publications
- Professor Igor Gerasimov — Doctor of History, Associate Professor (academic rank), Professor at the Department of Department of History of the Middle East Countries. His research interests focus on the history, culture, and written heritage of Sudan, with over 100 publications dedicated to these subjects
- Tatiana Obraztsova — Senior Lecturer at the Department of Department of History of the Middle East Countries. Her main expertise centres on history of Arab countries, Arabic historical texts, socio-political system of the Arab world, history of Eastern ideological doctrines
- Aleksandr Matveev — Senior Lecturer at the Department of Department of History of the Middle East Countries. Author of more than 70 research works
