The bachelor’s programme "Russian Philology (Russian Language and Literature)" is designed to develop in students knowledge of the theory and methodology of the Russian language and Russian literature. Graduates will acquire a fundamental knowledge of: the history and theory of literature; the history and current state of Russian; and state-of-the-art research methods. They will also have the skills of philological text analysis, and learn how to apply their knowledge in practical activities. They will be capable of: teaching in secondary education institutions; carrying out research activities in scientific institutions and libraries; and conducting editorial and publishing activities. The knowledge and skills acquired will enable graduates to address a wide range of tasks in mass communication.

The relations between the history of language and culture with the current state of the language and the features of the modern literary process are also taken into account.
- The training involves the scientific resources of the University, for example the Professor Larin Intradepartmental lexicographical studio.
- There is an opportunity to have various practical training: teaching practice in the best gymnasiums of St Petersburg; and linguistic practice at the Institute of Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
- The students also have dialectological, folklore, and museum and archival practices.
